Where will this be placed?
Built-in Dishwashers
Built-in Dishwashers offer a clean and custom look and feel to the kitchen. They install below a countertop and into the cabinetry itself. A dedicated water line will be required. A Built-in Dishwashers capacity is generally measured in number of place settings which can vary between 12 – 16. The most common are 24 inches wide.
Portable Dishwashers
Portable Dishwashers are different than their Built-in counterparts in that they are freestanding and aren't built into the cabinetry. They generally have wheels attached to the bottom for ease of movement. The water is supplied to the unit via an adapter that attaches directly to the sink's faucet. When not in use these can be moved or stored elsewhere to optimize room within the kitchen. Place setting capacity for these dishwashers' range between 8-12.
Drawer Dishwashers
Drawer dishwashers are unique in that instead of a door that folds down, these slide-out on a drawer mechanism. These can either be single drawer or double drawer depending on how much capacity is needed. The most common width for Drawer Dishwashers is 24”. A double drawer dishwashers' capacity most commonly is up to 14 settings.
Design and Control

Loading Your Dishwasher
Fold-down or Adjustable Tines
Certain dishwashers allow the user to adjust how the tines are distributed. Some have the option to fold down or adjusted. This is important because you have more room for larger pans or bowls.
Third Racks
A third rack is a perfect location to place utensils like tongs, knives, or whisks for cleaning. It can also be used to clean odd shaped dishware and free up room on the lower racks.
Silverware Caddies
A silverware caddie is a plastic recepticle used to house your dirty silverware. These are removeable for ease of loading and in some cases are even moveable within the dishwashers interior.
Tub Material
When it comes to tub material you have two options at your disposal, stainless steel and plastic. There are pros and cons to each so lets start with stainless steel.
Stainless Steel
Stainless Steel tubs are good at resisisting stains and odors. They tend to dry easier and more efficiently in addition to commonly being quiter as well. For the most part Stainless Steel tubs are attributed to higher cost given the superior material.
Plastic
Plastic tubs are durable. The gray interior does a good job at mitigating the appearance of any stains. They tend to be priced more affordably and are a good option for those wanting to stay within a budget.
Dishwasher Installation
Dishwasher installation isn't necessarily a simple plug and play operation. A dedicated water line will be required as well as some electrical hardwiring.
